It’s everyone’s favorite time of year: Halloween. That is, until it’s time to figure out a costume. Save yourself from last-minute costume embarrassment and use one of our ideas instead. No one wants to be that person who just throws on a pair of cat ears or a cowboy hat and calls it good. No, the best people dress up and I’ve even heard it may make your night more fun (gasp!). We promise this guide will help you avoid all the Halloween costume anxiety this year and maybe, just maybe, you could even win a costume contest or two. The Courage the Cowardly Dog
This is for the people who are tempted to put the least amount of effort into a costume and throw on the same pair of animal ears they have been wearing for the last 5 years. This is a slightly more niche version that is sure to win you some points with all those friends who are begging you to actually dress up for their costume parties this year. Plus, all the cool kids watched Courage the Cowardly Dog growing up (and definitely didn’t have any recurring nightmares because of it).
The Where the Wild Things are
We were recently inspired to bring this costume out of the archives after a day trip to the Renaissance Faire. Let us tell you, hot boys wear furry ears. The good thing about this costume is that if you already have a grey cardigan and grey sweatpants, you really only need a few accessories to embody this character, Max, King of the Wild Things.
The Olympic Shooters
We are still obsessing over Kim Yeji and Yusuf Dikec, shooting stars who both medaled at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Can you name a better couples costume this year? Oh, you can’t? That’s what we thought. These two style icons are the perfect way to get your stubborn significant other to dress up with you. And don't forget about potential nerf wars that could accompany these looks ;)
The Chappell Roan
There are so many looks to choose from when it comes to Chappell Roan, but we just knew we had to go with her iconic Gov Ball performance where she appeared as the Statue of Liberty. Can someone explain to us how to look that good in head-to-toe green body paint. The Costco chicken man
Now, if you’re unfamiliar with the Costco Chicken Man, we highly suggest you give him a search on TikTok. The Costco Chicken Man is currently our favorite TikTok star and rotisserie chicken advocate! His iconic barcode shirt allows the check-out employees to scan the shirt rather than his chicken. Whatever your feelings towards his interesting method to avoid “LED”, you’ve got to admit it’s a pretty good look.
The Sylvanian Drama critters
Alright, this may be our most niche costume suggestion yet. If you’re also chronically online, then you’re probably familiar with @SylvanianDrama and her captivating videos of Calico Critters. Seriously, how fun would it be to dress up like these iconic toys and create your own messy and absurd scenarios all night long? Whether or not they’re based on a true story is up to you, though.
The PONYO
This one is so cute we couldn't resist, and we’ve been on a “costumes for redheads” search lately due to Ryan and her bright hair color. We’re huge Hayao Miyazaki fans, and while it was hard to pick just one of his amazing characters to interpret, we knew it had to be Ponyo. Plus, you get to carry a bucketful of candy for the first time since going trick-or-treating as a kid!
The Blink twice
If you’re feeling a little down about summer ending and having to put away those linen pants you’ve been living in, don’t fret! This costume is the perfect way to keep the warm weather feeling going. Head-to-toe white will make you feel like you are still on that European vacation, drinking Aperol Spritz with your feet in the sand. Another bonus: you have an excuse to be one of those guys with a vintage camera all night, doing “press” for your friends and whatever venue you’ve stumbled into.
